Ollie’s Whisper of the Week

C is for Calm

Listen now!

The wind had arrived before they had even reached the beach, pressing against the car as though it had somewhere more important to be. By the time Ollie stepped onto the sand, it was being lifted in light swirls around his ankles and the strength of the wind tugged at his shirt sleeves as if testing how firmly he was standing.

The sea was louder than usual, rolling over itself in restless waves that hurried toward the shore and then pulled back again out towards the horizon, never quite settling but always moving.

James was already running along the water’s edge, arms out wide, chasing the seagulls that seemed to be working very hard just to stay up in the air.

Nothing about the afternoon looked calm to Ollie.

Crabs darted sideways into small hollows as the sand shifted. The seagulls tilted and corrected themselves mid-flight. The wind refused to soften even for them.

And yet with Ollies help, his mum had set up her easel in the dunes, sheltered away from the strongest winds.

She stood with her back to the hills behind her and faced the incoming tide, her brush moving steadily across the paper, her hair softly blowing in the same rhythm as the sea.

Ollie watched as she added the curve of a wave, the angle of a seagulls wing and the small shape of James and Dad near the shoreline.

On the paper, everything was still and calm.

The sea did not crash. The gulls did not fight the wind. James did not blur as he ran in circles.

It all looked calm and very quiet.

Ollie stepped closer, listening to the wind behind him and looking at the painted sea in front of him.

“Why does it look so calm?” he asked.

Mum smiled slightly without looking away from the canvas.

“What I see isn’t stopping, like it is in painting ” she said. “It’s just that one moment in time, that I can capture.”

Ollie looked again toward the shore. The waves were still rolling in and out. The wind was still pushing up and down. James was still running in wide, determined circles.

But nothing seemed to be at odds with anything else; together, they created a kind of calm.

The sea moved because it was meant to. The wind blew because it was just passing through. The gulls adjusted because that was how they flew and James was having fun because he wanted to.

Perhaps calm wasn’t something that happened when everything went quiet.

Perhaps it comes when nothing is trying to be different from what it already is.

He stood for a while longer, feeling the wind press against him and then letting it go round him, as it should, giving him a sense of calm in that very moment.

And with that, Ollie carried on, leaving nature to do what it had always done.
