Meet the Characters
Ollie’s family are his safe place, his parents are his first teachers, and they are the people who help shape the way he sees the world. At home, they encourage curiosity, kindness, and listening, not just to each other, but to nature too.
Mum and Dad guide Ollie gently each day, his younger brother James reminds him to laugh and to explore the world, and Luna is always by his side to listen to what he learns. Together, they give Ollie the confidence to step out into the world, knowing he always has somewhere safe to return to.
Ollie
He’s curious, kind, and the sort of boy who notices things other people might miss — the way the wind moves through leaves, how animals watch before they act, and how every living thing seems to have something important to say.
Ollie lives in Ontario, Canada, with his family, close to woodland, lakes, and open skies. From a young age, he’s loved being outdoors — walking forest paths, exploring beaches, and asking why the world works the way it does.
Ollie has a very special ability: he can hear, speak to and understand animals.
But he isn’t a wizard or a superhero. His real strength is that he listens — carefully, kindly, and with an open heart. Through his many adventures, Ollie learns that every creature has a role to play, and that even small actions can make a big difference to our planet.
As Ollie grows, so do his adventures — from learning to listen… to understanding… before taking up a position to influence others and act on environmental change .
Mum – Louise
Ollie’s mum, Louise, is an artist.
She paints landscapes, animals, and the natural world, often capturing the quiet beauty others might overlook. Louise sees the world in colour, shape, and feeling — and she’s taught Ollie that nature isn’t just something to look at, but something to understand and protect.
She’s gentle, thoughtful, and endlessly creative, always encouraging Ollie to follow his curiosity and express what he feels. Many of Ollie’s adventures begin because Louise believes that spending time in nature is one of the most important things a child can do.
Dad – David
Ollie’s dad, David, works as a freelance risk consultant — a job that’s all about thinking ahead, understanding consequences, and helping people make better choices.
David loves lists, plans, and problem-solving, but he also loves long walks, good conversations, and supporting Ollie’s ideas — especially when those ideas help animals or the planet. When Ollie wants to do something to make a difference, it’s often David who helps turn that idea into action.
Calm, practical, and encouraging, David helps Ollie understand that caring about the world also means taking responsibility for it.
Brother – James
James, is Ollie’s younger brother.
He’s full of energy, questions, and enthusiasm — always ready for fun and often a step behind Ollie on adventures (usually with lots of questions along the way).
James reminds Ollie what it’s like to see the world with fresh eyes, and even though he doesn’t hear animals the way Ollie does, his excitement and honesty bring joy and laughter to the family.
Luna
And finally, there’s Luna
Luna is Ollie’s dog — loyal, clever, and always nearby. She understands Ollie in a way no one else quite can, and she’s often the first to sense when something important is about to happen.
Luna listens without interrupting, keeps secrets without being asked, and reminds Ollie that friendship doesn’t always need words.
Together
Together, Ollie and his family create a home built on curiosity, kindness, creativity, and care for the natural world. Each of them — through art, understanding, planning, play, and loyalty — has helped shape Ollie into the listener, learner, and protector of nature that readers come to know through the books.
And this… is where every adventure begins
